How do I fix a broken USB port that is shorting out?

I dropped my macbook pro a long time ago with a cable plugged in and the port stopped working. It was only one port and the other one was fine. No noticeable differences of the ports besides the fact that the broken one's internal "tab" in the port itself is a little higher than the other. Nothing is sticking out etc. Now both USB ports are disabled and the notification of them using too much power is reoccurring, (both ports are now disabled). I replaced the battery and it did not fix it. The battery is draining a lot still; also the console shows that the port is causing an "overcurrent detected".

Any help would be appreciated.

Can you take a good set of pictures of both the external socket and the internal logic board (both sides) and post them here so we can see.

I have the same issue as well. Try resetting the SMC https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295 (read instructions carefully). Hopefully this helps you out more than it did me. If the issue continues, you should try out to see if you can buy an external USB hub with a power adapter. Here is one that worked on mine (I have an 2011-early MacBook Pro)

Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQFG...

NOTE: Make sure it has a Power Adapter, choose the one that fits your needs.

This is an alternative method of solving your problem. Though if you have already FIXED the USB disabled issue on your Mac...please let me know what you did ^_^ (That'd be great!)

I haven't really done much with it although the USB disabled notifications aren't showing up anymore because I updated to the latest OS. The ports are still broken however. I'll consider the powered USB hub, thanks.
