dropped forward off the tripod. The shutter is loose and it takes half of a picture

May be miror is blocked when it rotate to expose the cmos or it's the cmos itself.

Your camera hit the ground.
The next step is to take it to a Nikon recommended repair shop.
Budget for about $150 repair cost.
Alternatively, look for a 2nd hand D90. I've seen them on kijiji.com/craigslist for as low as $350.
