NO WIFI greyed out.

Well, back when i worked at McDonald i spilled sweet tea on my iPod, and let me tell you... it was horrible at first, the screen was actually stained on the inside, the wifi had the "no wifi" appearing in Grey and the back light would die every few minutes. After much determination..and rice it made a full recovery, except the stain... this was about 6 months ago and every once in a while when i update it the wifi will go down and the update will fail for over 60 reasons so i have to close itunes... after a few more restores it eventually works. Currently i updated to 4.0 .. similar problem but it worked out again. About a week ago i left my ipod in my room only to return to it off and COMPLETELY dead, no power at all, plugged it into my xbox to recharge it..the connect to itunes thing appeared. so i did the usual 10 restores to try and fix it but there was no luck, the wifi was still gone, i then tried multiple jailbreaks as well as resetting it and putting it in recover mode or whatever you call it when you hold the power button and home button. ( i apologize for the long story) so currently my ipod is unjailbroken but is wifi broken, please help.

Your mistake was not opening the ipod and cleaning the insides up. After a tea spill you're luck you got 6 months of use out of the ipod with all the corrosion on the inside. Your best bet is to open and clean up the insides with 90% alcohol and keep your fingers crossed. Use this guide to open your ipod and clean up a little. Pay attention to the antennae and connectors and clean them up.

ahhh screw it ,ill just buy a 3g, sounds good to me, can use whtver parts still work on this guy as extra arts or if one of my buds who have a 2g need a part, well.. I'm not mad at the guide or the tool or anything, my fault... through the time i had it it's been cracked..ect anyway so... new ipod time =)

You broke it that fast? Right after i responded? Thats some bad luck. You have to take your time and be patient with these type of repairs. I wish your repair would have been succesful.

I know this post is old, but maybe this information may help someone else out, I have repaired a lot of iPods and have run across this issue several times.

One example I have in mind is an iPod 2gen that had gotten wet (the moisture indicator was bright red). I was able to bring most of it back from the dead, but was unable to get wifi to work...the wifi selector was grayed out under the settings. I took it back apart to look at it again.

The wifi assemble is at the top right corner of the device, right behind the black shield that is visible on the backside of the outer stainless shell. If you remove the three screws that holds the entire top pcb assembly in place, and gently lift the ribbon wire that connects the top and bottom half, on the backside of the top PCB assemble, you will see a small rectangle metal cover. This covers the broadcom chipset for the wireless. In this particular iPod, I noticed some scorching on this cover. I gently pried the cover up from one of the lengthwise sides. Be careful, this cover is soldered at 4 corners, and I had to break two of the solder points to lift it just high enough so I could see underneath. At this point, I saw a couple blown resistors next to the broadcom chip.

I did not attempt to replace these components, however, I did have a definitive answer on why the WiFi was not working on this iPod.

Hope this saves someone some time in diagnosing a wifi issue after they have performed the other various common fixes to this issue that are found on the web.

Okay so you worked at McDonald and spilled tea as well:)? Please do not ask your question as an answer to somebody elses question. They do get lost since nobody can see that you are asking. Okay, now where this is out of the way, please provide more details about what happened so we all can assist you as much as we can.

Im having the same issue with my 3rd gen itouch after this latest update. The wifi is simply grey and I never had a problem before.

Ive tried everything-- except busting it open to look at the tiny bits of " I have no idea WHAT that is" on the inside.

Someone stated that when I restored the 3rd generation, I may have reset it with the restore for my 4th gen and now it is hopeless and confused.

Indeed I did look at itunes and it has two 4th gens listed/assoc with my account.

What did I do and who would I go to get it fixed?

GREYED OUT WIFI SOLVED

Hi all i know this is old but just fixed greyed out wifi on ipod touch 2 here is what you need:

1st download Ibackupbot .

right once downloaded dont open it yet

1. back up ipod in itunes

2. when finished close itunes leave ipod plugged in then open ibackupbot

(click ok for found back ups)

in the list look for your ipod and the newest date click on it ,

look down list on right go to (systemconfiguration/com.apple.wifi.plist) double click on it right a box comes up click CANCEL .

3 you will now see a list look for <key>allowenable</key>

under that it should read <false/>

if it reads <true/> change it to <false/>

4 goto the square disc in top left of the box click to save then exit that box .

5 goto the ipod/iphone with the blue arrow click it , it will ask you if you want to restore click yes

6 your ipod will say restore in progress leave it alone

7. at last a window opens saying done ipod may reboot click ok IT WILL REBOOT

8 . check your wifi settings again let me know if it works for you as it did me

regards Tim

HI update to solving greyed out wifi my sons ipod 2nd gen had this i did as in my post above this worked for a while the problem has come back but to solve fully ive had to downgrade from ios 4.2.1 to 4.1 , wifi seems to work on every ios accept 4.2.1 on my sons ipod 2g.

based on this i would downgrade ios to the one before wifi grayed itself out.

regards Tim

i tried that and it still isn't working

da

i tried also doesn't work it just put back the back up into your device , how ever it could have fixed the problem if this one appeared after upgrade so it just downgrade but not sure about that !

It is incredible that apple device users didn 't took this to the trial court as so many people are experiencing that problem , and regarding the price of their devices !!
