This question has been discussed before. If you intend to do repairs, it would be wise to study up on it, here's the best question and answers on it: Do I really need a anti-static strap/mat for dismantling a desktop?

I know this is 7+ years old at this point but I have the same question and I can't help but notice that the chosen solution is referencing answers/links that speak to the question in terms of its desktop application, not cell phones which is what OP specifically asked about

@boognishmang The info is good when working on any type of electronics, be it a cell phone or a computer.

Thanks, it was. After much searching and not coming up with much as ESD mitigation pertaining to phones is concerned I revisited the link you posted all those years ago and it was indeed helpful, thank you.

Yes! You need both.

It's important to prevent ESD, because they can result in broken devices/pieces.

Always be careful when working with sensitive electronics.

and what should I connect the wristband to?

I'm trying to replace the screen on a Pixel 6 Pro and I've got the same question. I just got the iFixit P6P screen replacement kit and am ready to go except for this question mark that I can't seem to find a difinitive answer to. I have an anti-static wrist strap, though I'm not certain that my mat is anti-static. I don't believe it is but I could be wrong; it's one of the big blue silicone mats you'd use for PCB repair but it doesn't have a clip and/or similar cord to the one my wrist strap has.

I'm not even certain that it's necessary to use for a phone display replacement but I'd rather err on the side of caution, I just I can't seem to get an answer as to whether it's necessary or not in the first place. The solution selected above is specific to desktop repair, not cell phones (and says so right in the link/title). I'm inclined to use the wrist strap anyway but I don't know what to attach it to... Somewhere on the chassis of the phone, maybe?
