Not sure whats wrong my iPod/ what to replace. Sound?

My iPod 5th generation video appears to be working fine, although it is a little beat up. you can scroll thru the menus and select songs however they do not play. when clicking a song you will hear a slight fuzzy noise and thats it.

I was planning to change the front and back panel, maybe even the battery just for the !&&* of it, but what should i change to fix the sound issue?

More Information: the fuzzy sound seems to "click" in a specific rhythm.

The ticker that clicks when you scroll thru the menus sounds fine.

Mike, start off by running a diagnostics. Check on here about how to do that and what the results mean. After that you may have to take a look at the hard drive, as well as try a restore. If it is a sound issue only, meaning that the music progresses but you do not hear anything, then you are having issues with the audio IC, which is common for this model. This "fuzzy sound seems to "click" in a specific rhythm" makes me think is more of a HDD issue.
