How to get music from itunes onto old iPod?

I just got a barely used ipod touch (2nd gen) but I can't figure out how to load playlists onto it. I understand that it may not be compatable with current operating system software. Is it possible to at the very least manually load some music on it for when I don't have wifi? Right now I can't even get my computer to recognize it.
