MacBook Pro not showing login, just white screen, cable loose?

I cleaned the fan in my macbook this morning. When I turned my macbook back on everything was working fine, it loaded ok, except that I can't see anything on the screen.

I know it has loaded because the screen starts to go to sleep or dims after couple of minutes. What I see is a grey/white screen depending on the brightness. I'm sure behind the grey screen is my login screen.

When I was cleaning the fan, I unplugged the three connectors (the hard drive, and the two next to that). I also had a look at the data display connector which I think may have caused my problem. But I did plug them all back in, the mac can't be that sensitive can it?

Help please!

Hi

Sounds like a hard drive connection issue.

In my experience Apple products are very sensitive.

What did you use to clean the Mac?

I would make sure that all the connections are secure and that your HDD cable is not damaged.

If none of that works try an SMC reset.

Hard drive connection? Can you tell me a bit more?

I only cleaned out the dust, no liquids or cleaners. Just dry cleaning.

I then made sure the connectors were tight, the optical drive, airport cable, hard drive and the data display cable. Just double checked those and they are all pushed in.

Someone just said that I should have disconnected the battery connector first otherwise I may have short circuited something. Is that right?

I don't know the battery has caused a problem as my mac is turning on fine now, it's just not able to display my data, it actually responds if I adjust the brightness up and down. So it's almost as though it's on and booting but can't show me my data.

Still got the white screen, what else could I check?

Change the cable.

I agree with tiger, a white screen usually indicates a hard drive issue. The hard drive/IR cables go out frequently on this machine. If you have another Mac see if you can access the hard drive via Target mode.

The HDD cable has been unplugged from the board, I would try and reseat that cable and try again. Good call on trying the drive on another machine, could even try to see if it spins up with a SATA external cable. But I do think the HDD cable is the problem on this one.
