Why is my iPod not responding when I click the buttons?

Ipod nano 3rd generation; the touch wheel still works and responds to my touch and the buttons allow me to click them but the actual ipod itself doesnt respond when you click the buttons. The buttons arent jammed but the ipod just doesnt respond anymore!
