Screen goes black after awhile, unresponsive machine?

My PowerBook G4 12" died last year, it’s screen started to behave very odd. First the mouse pointer "dissolved" into a "block", then I’d get stripes across the screen, and it would end up utterly unresponsive. However, I could boot it into FireWire target mode, so I got all data off it. Ran Apple Hardware test on it (from the original install disks), and it gave me an error code, but I couldn’t read that, because a grey horizontal stripe covered it.

Left it for "dead" in the basement for a year, took it out, charged it, and it bootet normally and allowed for a bit of use (Mail checked mail, Calendar sent out some reminders), and was finally able to get my bookmarks saved and over to another machine on the same local network. Then the display got weird again, and it became a bookrest again.

The problem reminds me of an old IceBook (the dual bootable kind), that you could keep going a little longer by pressing down hard on the R side of the trackpad.

Questin: Is it the Motherboard, or just some videocircutry thats’s gone haywire?
