Keyboard and trackpad stopped working, it works only in login. Help?

I woke up my computer the other day finding the keyboard and trackpad not working. The only button working was the power button.

When the login screen shows, the keys and pad works. The second I log in it stops working. Ive tried resetting SMC and PRAM, reinstalling Yosomite, nothing works.

Its clearly a software issue since its working in loging.

Any help please?

Now Im using wireless keyboard and mouse.

hello guys if someone still has to suffer from the same problem I have the solution worked for me. You have to open your Mac:

1 - disconnect the battery

2 - remove the keyboard and mouse connectors

3 - make a small cleaning in the region and reconnect the connectors

4 - With the battery still disconnected, connect the charger and do the nvram (option + comand + P + R).

Hugs, I hope I have helped

Its likely not a SW issue.

I had a similar problem with an early 2014 Macbook Air. Did all the SW "fixes" listed on the web including re-installing/upgrading OS with no luck. Discovered that the keyboard/trackpad worked in recovery mode after boot but not in OS - implying a SW not HW issue. This observation proved incorrect. In the end, I replaced the trackpad ribbon cable in the laptop ($8 on Amazon) using Pentalobe, Torx drivers ($7 on Amazon). I opened the case and inspected the ribbon cable. There didn't appear to be any damage to the connectors but I replaced cable anyway (reference youtube videos). After reboot, keyboard and trackpad are working perfectly.

It seems the ribbon cable is a delicate item in these machines. My only regret was not replacing the cable sooner.

I have a strange keyboard and trackpad fail. They stop at the os boot but works after (sleep) wakeup for only 20 seconds. Then stops.

On a machine this new I would be talking to Apple Support.

If this answer is acceptable please remember to return and mark it accepted.

Apple Support is difficult since they only operate with telephone calls. Im from Norway living in Thailand and dont speak thai, and they cant call me from Norway.

As a workaround connect a USB (doesn't have to be Apple) keyboard and see if that works. Also any USB mouse, and most Bluetooth mice/keyboards will work.

In a case like this the first thing to try would be deleting all the ~User/Library/Preference (.plist) files... many times strange behavior can be a damaged or corrupt preference. Did you recently add any fonts? Corrupt fonts also cause gremlins in the OS. -- Another quick way to find out if it's a corrupt file would be to create another user account --

da

Deleting .plist worked!! Thank you so much!

da

Didn't work after all. Stopped working after a couple of hours. Tried deleting downloaded fonts to, didn't help. Any suggestions?

da

Since it worked at first think about what you did (what programs you used) right before it stopped working. That program, or, that program's .plist could be corrupt, or causing the corruption. So try it again. You could even delete all the ~User/Library/Preference files - but you'll have to reset some of your application preferences. The easier way would be to create a new user account and try that for a day if it doesn't go bad in a couple hours you'll have verification that there's more than one bad apple (pun) in the bunch of apps you're using.

Wow!!! Thanks Sam. This worked. Can you define what was the problem and why it worked? Thanks.

da

Just as an information to everyone. My problem was much weirder. Just three keys on the right in each row were not working.

da

Had the same problem. The people at the mac store were absolutely no help! First ran an anti-virus and then did the alt key 5 times and works.

da

Press alt key 5 times when?

da

I’d like to know when to press the alt key too

Try starting up in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key on startup. This will disable any extensions that may have been inadvertently installed. If it does start up and run OK, you know it is a software issue. Also try starting up in repair mode by holding down the R key and run Disk Utilities.

It had the same problem i Safe Mode - worked in login but not after I logged in. Disk Utilities said everything look fine.

This is very wierd....

da

I am able to enter the password using safe mode by holding down the Shift key on startup. But when I restart it from sade mode, i am unable to enter the password as keyboard is not working.

da

Subhadip - you have an extension or a virus preventing you from logging in. Run a good virus program from an external boot drive or clean external system. Otherwise you will need to do a clean install.

All of these people and no answer i think i figured it out go to your system preferences. You will need to have a working mouse to get there obviously. Once your there go to Accessibility then click on the mouse and trackpad option. Once you are there you will most likely have ignore built in trackpad while using mouse. Uncheck that and your track pad should work now. You can disconnect your mouse and you should be good to go. At least thats what worked for me hope that helps.

For anyone who may still be having this problem, I have just fixed the issue for a MacBook Air I am working on.

I tried all the PRAM resetting, deleting plist files, terminal commands, removing bluetooth devices and checking for viruses of which none of those methods worked.

I then turned to hardware as my issue, I removed the bottom cover and the battery then proceeded to remove the trackpad flex cable.

Once I had removed the flex cable I flipped it over to see the pins on the under side of the cable, I noticed on the motherboard side there was some black dust or debris or something on there so I cleaned that off with some isopropyl and a cotton tip and put it all back together and there you have it! It is all working for me now with no issues.

I did the same! Took the back cover off, and removed the trackpad flex cable from the logic board. Then used isopropyl alcohol with a tooth brush to remove debris, and prevent any other particles like the strings from a swab to stuck in it. It works, and hasn’t failed me again

I have had the same problem and I have find the solution... I was ready to restaure an old back up from time machin. To do so, I have before clean the desktop. I classified and removed all the desktop documents and restart the computer. Miracle, my macbook worked fine again. I think a document on the desktop was the cause of an interference with the keyborad and trackpad.

I had recently installed nvidia egpu driver(https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/wip-nvi...) which was causing the issue. Uninstalling it fixed the issue.

Thank you to @jesan90 and @Denny Glover.

My keyboard and trackpad worked at login screen, and stopped working after logging in. I tried all software fixes and gotten no result. Then I opened the back cover, took out the battery and unplugged the trackpad flex cable. I saw some ports had turned black. I wiped it with alcohol, put everything back together. Then it worked!

I was searching for how to assemble a MacBook and found this video. This guy had the same problem and did a demonstration of how to change the trackpad flex cable. In my case, I didn’t have to change the cable, simply wiping the ports with alcohol fixed the problem.

It worked for me. I just removed flex, cleaned it with lil water and kept it back

Suresh Payala as a pro tip don’t use water for electronics. Use 99% alcohol or any higher to 90% should do the job. Water will bring corrosion and alcohol will evaporate in a few seconds living the device corrosion free and problems free.
