Problem with startup after replacing HDD

I replaced my bad 1 TB hard drive with a new 3 TB using your guide for my model iMac. I inserted original OS CD and held "C" key while turning on. I could hear the chime and my cd drive spinning. I never got anything but a black screen. I even took it apart again to make sure everything was plugged in properly and securely. Started up as explained above with same results.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
