Why does the auto focus not focus?

When I try to take a picture the auto focus just moves in and out. It will not stop and focus.

I would guess the focus setting might be on continuous mode but check your settings here..

Try taking the lens off and cleaning the contacts on both the lens and the camera body. Make sure the lens setting is set to A and the camera setting next to the lens is set to AF Then look at the display on the top of the camera and make sure it says AF-A.

If it still doesn't work, try a different lens. If that makes it work you have a bad lens and you can send it in for repairs or replace it.

how do you clean the lens and the camera body inside. I am a little worried about doing more damage...

You do not mention what lens you are using, but the most common lens you see with D90s is the 18-135, and on that lens focusing in and out can be caused by a failure of the magnetic sensor on the side of the lens, or a failure of the lens circuit board. As Nikon has stopped selling parts, your best bet is to first check the camera with another lens. If it works OK with another lens, then send in the bad one to Nikon.

I have the same problem, but it does not matter which lens I use, the auto focus moves in and out but it does not focus. In LiveView mode the AF works fine, but not in the normal mode. I have tried to clean the contacts of the lens and the camera and checked the mirror and the submirror in the camera, but is still does not work.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Kind regards

Alex

I know this have been up for a long time, but thought I should do an additon...

The Nikon DSLRs have 2 different focus systems, the main focus sensor is used when the mirror is down, and are using the viewfinder. When in live view, it is using contrast detection with the main sensor.

It sounds like you may have an issue with the main focus sensor, or part of the mirrors sending the light to it. There is a tiny mirror on the back of the main mirror that sends the light down to the sensor and it detects there.

(Tried to add photo, but cannot... See on CreativeLive.com, John Greengo's Fundamentals of Photography 2018, in the Focus section...)

This case it could even be a dirty sensor.

Could try flipping up the mirror manually, and should have another mirror moving that is attached to the backside of it, and if it does, look on the bottom, and towards the side that the collar is to see if it's dirty.

If not, it could be the sensor is going bad, too.

I have the same problem, my nikon d90 auto focus in auto mode but when the camera is on manual mode and the lens is on auto, it will not auto focus. What is the problem please as the camera was not like this earlier today.

If the camera is in manual and the lens is in auto or the camera is in auto and the lens is in manual... the result is manual focus. This is normal.

The auto focus needs to be set (A/M, M/A, or A) on the lens *AND* the autofocus switch being in AF-on position on the camera for it to enable the autofocus system.

I think you were mistaken on if it was set, as if you could autofocus with just the lens enabled and the camera's switch in the manual focus position, then you have an issue with the camera that is having issues.
