Since the temperature is too warm, the clicking is probably your compressor overload relay. If the compressor is too hot or pulling a lot of amps, the relay will break the circuit to the compressor to protect it. If the condensor coils are dirty this can cause the compressor to run longer and with less air flow it will overheat. The condensor fan motor could have something caught in the blades also.

Take the back access panel off. Is it dirty? Is the fan working? Is the compressor hot? Listen for the clicks. The relay is on the left side of compressor. Is that the noise?

Unplug it, Let it cool down then clean the coils with a vacuum. Check the fan blade, it should turn freely.

Mayer, could you explain how I get an AVIATOR? Also, I guess I'm missing something while registering cause I've added my email etc.

Thank you

@kaykay, I forgot this early in the morning, but Kat-Kay can tell you.

The clicking noise is the overload cut off or OTC. It opens the circuit to the compressor if the temperature is too hot or the compressor is pulling too many amps. This is to protect the compressor. It clicks on and off. You should hear one click and then the compressor would start running. Most people don’t notice the click when everything is fine. But when the compressor isn’t working properly you’ll hear a click every few minutes and the compressor won’t start. Reasons compressor overheats - dirty coils, condenser fan failed, Freon leak, capacitor weak, run/start relay bad, bad compressor. Most ppl don’t clean coils untill the damage is done. When the system gets hot the gas doesn’t flow properly, copper tubing stresses causing leaks and/or erosion and restrictions. Dirty coils is usually the cause sealed system/compressor issues.

Thank you for your answer. It is the closest thing I found to solve my problem or answer my question. But I'm still a little bit confused. You said in typical operation people don't normally notice the clicking sound. However it's unclear whether that clicking sound is supposed to happen or is it happening as a result of overheating or over amperage draw?

For context I had a refrigerator that was not cooling, noticed the compressor was not kicking on and the internet pointed me at replacing the start run capacitor and in my view I was going to replace the refrigerator if that simple fix did not work. After that repair it is working however I notice a click everytime the compressor turns off or turns on. It's still away from the wall so that could explain why I'm hearing it where I would normally not hear it. But before I put it back and consider it a done deal I want to make sure it is in fact supposed to click everytime the compressor turns on or off? Thanks for your help.

@bveater The clicking noise is from the relay contacts that are being energized to send voltage to the compressor. When they make contact they click, like a typical switch clicks. The thermal overload will also click. Heat and amps will warp the metal contacts inside it. When heated the metal warps and breaks the circuit to the compressor if your compressor is good, you’ll hear a click when it starts and you’ll hear it click when it goes off. That is the relay. If you hear a click (the relay making contact) and them you hear another click within a minute, that 2nd click is the thermal overload doing it’s job by stopping the compressor from coming on if it’s too hot or pulling too many amps. But, if your compressor isn’t hot and it’s amps are low, then the overload isn’t operating properly.

I hope I explained that so you can understand.

Usually a clicking noise is a magnet being energized and moved in and out of position. This could be something getting a weak connection a part failing or it could be whatever is sending it the signal to energize that is causing the problem. If it is constant are you positive it is a click click sound and not a part maybe loose and vibrating and humming or anything like that?

can a bad condenser fan motor cause the main board to click every 2 seconds

We had a regular clicking/ticking noise that was driving us crazy.  No article on the internet addressed it, and it would come and go erratically - I could never get it to make the noise when I pulled the refrigerator out and searched.  That turned out to be an important clue - my wife finally spent $120 to get a repairman out, and it turned out to be a warning label on the power cord being blown by the exhaust fan against the back of the unit.  He said he'd seen that happen a dozen times. I'm putting this here so others can avoid the same facepalm moment.

I’ve had the same problem. My roommate would stand hunched over with the fridge door open while staring wistfully at all my food, while rhymically taping their fingernail on the outside of the fridge. You may want to have a frank talk with your roommate about their marijuana habit, and proper grocery planning. This stopped a lot of the clicking noises from the fridge; for me. I plan to use my shop vac in blower mode, next time I hear the clicking. This should clear my roommate away from the front of the fridge, so I can blow the remaining dust off the compressor coil. The shop vac in suction mode removed a lot of dust and hair; this improved the functionality of the compressor; mostly stopping the overheat sensor from clicking on. Maybe just do a combination of first suction then blower, to really de insulate your compressor coil. Keep the shop vac handy in blower mode for your roommate, or husband/wife, whatever the case may be.
