Why it starts when power is connected?

When I connect the power cable the mini starts, the fan is working at full speed and I get no display on screen not anything else. I can not turn it off using the power switch at the back. The way to stop it is to remove the power cable.

Any ideas?

It sounds like there is a hardware defect. This needs to go in for diagnostics at a local Apple authorized service center. You can also use Apple's online Service Assistant. It could be any number of things, but I'd be prepared for a logic board issue which may cost a few hundred to fix :(

Thank you. I too believe it is hardware problem but it is always better to ask if someone else has seen this before.

I had this problem. It was a bad button. There's an car audio website - mp3car.com - that sells button extenders that plug right into the power button jack on the logic board. Not as pretty as using the actual button, but $13 beats having to buy a brand new logic board.

Brian,

Thank you for your answer. Which button is it? I have a second broken mac mini from which I could remove the button if I knew which one you mean. Can you post a picture of it?

On my mini, it was a bad power button. On the back by the button there's a cable that connects to the logic board. That website sells basically a replacement button that clips into the logicboard. I believe they use it as an extender for car audio. You're going to have to solder the wire to the button. And then just plug it in and use that button to power on and off. I'm sure you could whip the same thing together out of the parts bin at radio shack but I'm lazy.
