Why does backlight go out

The backlight goes dark unless I apply pressure to the lower left side of case.

The LCD is showing content properly- just no backlight. The video mirroring also works properly.

Is this a cable/connector issue or a failure of some sub-assembly?

Does connecting it to an external monitor work perfectly? if so then it sounds like a inverter issue. Replace the cable as soon as you can because if it shorts on something it may damage the logic board or whatever it was that pulled it out/pinched it. And until you fix it, you should keep your laptop in a position where the LCD is lit up and keep it that way and only move it after its shut down or standby.
