You have a bit of work in front of you here.
First some of your data may not be compatible with the apps you have on your iPad. So consider that on what you put onto your iPad as your space is limited depending on which model you get.
As long as you have your MacBooks HD and it still works you should be able to transfer most of your stuff (data) to your iPad.
OK heres the skinny. You'll need to get an external HD case to mount your HD into. If your friend has a newer USB3 Mac then go with a USB3 case other wise you'll really want to find a FireWire 800 case (USB2 is just to slow). Once your set here plug your HD into your friends system and open up the preference folder click on Startup Disk select your drive and restart if all goes well here your system files on your external drive will running. If this fails it just means more work rto get this done (see the bottom for more).
OK, now run your iTunes you should see your songs and you should be using your iTunes account. If you haven already sign up for iTunes Match (iCloud).
I should point out you don't need to upgrade your songs and your music that is not part of the catalog will be copied up to the server (consider that if you have a slow internet connection as it could take quite awhile). Once you have your songs and other iTunes content see if you see it with your new iPad (via WiFi or Cellar connection). If you do that should take care of that aspect of things. Now you'll need to manually move your other files over via the dock connector or going directly to the iCloud service using your account. As you move the different file types over make sure you have an application which can access them on your iPad.

OK, Things didn't go so easy here. You'll need to create a new user on your friends system and then manually move your iTunes library over to your friends system (under the new user account) then proceed as above.
