Need passcode for Migration Assistant - Solved

I have a customer with a new 2013 i5 MacMini running 10.8.3. She wants me to transfer her data from a Power Macintosh G5 2.0 DP running 10.5.8. I downloaded and installed the Migration Assistant Update for Mac OS X Leopard v1.0. When I put the G5 in target mode the hard drive icon shows up on the desktop of the Mini, but Migration Assistant will not mount the drive. When I put the Mini in Target mode, Migration Asst. asks for a numeric PASSCODE. Not a password. You would think this passcode would show up on the Target screen but does not. How do I find this Passcode?

Solution

Hook the machine up via Firewire cable. Start up both machines but do not use the Target Mode key. Start up migration asst. on both machines. Select "From a Mac on one and "To" a Mac on the other. A five digit Passcode will appear on the screens of both machines and they are now ready for data transfer.

Mayer -

Checkout this Apple TN OS X: About FileVault 2 and MacWorld - Complete Guide to FileVault 2 Are you getting prompted for the Recovery Key? Which is a five digit number.

It looks like a five digit code but calls it passcode. I think, in the morning, I'll put the hard drive into an Intel MacPro and upgrade the system to 10.6.1, then see if it will work.

I have a faint memory of it being called "Passcode" in the older version of FileVault, but I'm not sure (never used it, but went to a training even on it years ago). Does she remember using it or some other encryption app on the HD?

Customer has no memory of ever using FileGuard.

FireWire connected HD's haven't prompted for a passcode with Migration Assistant in the past. I could see that if you used WiFi or Ethernet as you could have other systems present on the network. How odd... Is this a new thing in newer versions of it? I haven't used it in quite a while.

Dan - It was new to me. After the transfer I will hook them up in Target mode but not use the "T" and see if they now see each other using just the FireWire cable, but I've got a five hour transfer wait.
