Canon 300D Shot numbering not working

My camera tells me how many shots I can fit on the compact flash card and as I take photos the number reduced. However, after inserting a new 4gb card the number is not reducing as I take photos. I've formatted the card several times but no difference. Any ideas gratefully received.

hi Rob

I'm just wondering if your "problem" isn't really a problem...

first of all, can I ask for clarification? are you saying that the LCD top panel showing number of frames remaining is staying "stuck" at 999? and did you only just notice this with a 4GB card? how about when you use a 2GB or 1GB card?

one thing you should know is that top LCD frame count is an estimate only, based on storage space remaining, JPEG settings and ISO - because JPEG file sizes vary depending on the actual image content.

A JPEG file from your 300D at low ISO might be roughly 2~3MB (Large/Fine setting), meaning a 4GB card might hold over 1000 photos. So when you first start shooting on a blank card, it's possible that you still have over 1000 estimated photos left but the display simply shows 999 (the max displayable number)

note that setting a high ISO means the photos will be noisier, therefore resulting JPEGs will be compressed less efficiently and therefore likely be larger files. this could explain why your file count will decrease noticeably using ISO1600 because each image is taking more space. Simply changing the ISO setting on the camera will change the remaining shot number, as the camera changes it's space remaining calculation

note: on my EOS 40D with 8GB card at lower ISOs, I can shoot on an empty card for a while before the count decreases below the 999 mark, but that's not a sign of a malfunctioning frame count, it just means I still have space for more than an estimated (approx) 1000 frames at current settings.

as long as your photos are being recorded on the CF card, I wouldn't worry about the shot remaining counter with a large card, as long as the number eventually starts decreasing when the card starts to fill up. just remember it's an estimation based on the MBs remaining, not a true count of frames.

Ahh, I misread the problem. Even on my 7D, when I have a 8 gb card in it, it shows as 999 until the remaining is less then 999

Bac - glad to see you back, missed your input

hey mayer - thanks! got sidetracked ever since the 2010 Olympics were in town :) will try to get back into contributing regularly again...

back to the question: I forgot to mention - not only ISO setting, but changing the JPEG compression level and resolution settings will affect the top LCD "frame" count estimate.

try putting in a smaller card (that holds fewer than 1000 JPEGs), and vary those 3 settings without taking a shot - you'll see that the count remaining changes

I aslo have a canon 300D, it's working without card, but after inputing card it won't turn on :(

there are some possible reasons for this problem.

first of all - the 300d normally does not know 4gb cf cards

did you update to the latest firmware ?

there are ways to format a cf card different - so the camera works better with them

but the eos had sometimes problems with the 4gb: CLICK

try to update the camera and format the card like mentioned in the link above

Thanks for that Markus, I think the basic problem is what you say, I'm using a 4gb card. I looked at the instructions to format the disk in a different way but didn't understand them ! Interestingly, the countdown works if I set the iso to 1600, but at no other speeds.

hi rob,

what computer do you use ?

if it's a pc you can simply use the dos command prompt.

plug in a cf carf reader and look what drive is assigned to your cf card (let's say it's drive F)

now comes the formatting part, type: Format F: /FS:FAT32 /A:64K this would took a few seconds/minutes - when it's done (after it says it's done) - type exit (or simply use the red x) and remove the cf card and plug it into your camera

see my comment below about how changing the ISO setting will affect the calculated remaining number of shots...

you're right, that could be an option i've forgot about (i use a 8gb card in my 20d - but i only use raw)

but the 300d is known for problems with 4gb cards - there are a few cards that work without problems - like sandisk (i use them too) - but not those crappy copys on ebay

There should be an option somewhere in the menu for the numbering of the pictures. On my Canon EOS 7D, its under File numbering and set it on Continuous and also do a manual reset of the numbering system and see if that works.

I think the best solution is for me to get a 2g card. Thanks for all the answers/help.

"best" is relative - i use a 8gb in my eos 20d - and i don't care how many pictures above 999 could be.

i mostly shoot in raw and therefor is a 8gb perfect ;-)

The Canon Rebel/300D LCD display cannot display a shot count # greater than 999. This is not an error with the camera, the LCD simply does not have a fourth digit in the shot # display. Just use the camera normally with the 4Gb card. The number display will start working again when the amount of free space on the card drops to a level where it will not hold more than 999 more pictures.

Tried what you wrote Markus but got the following in the command box.

The specified cluster size is too big for FAT32

I've had to format it again in camera and got the same problem.

Didn't think about the 999 being an estimate and that it may start counting down once it has less than 999. Will try it at 400 ISO and see what happens. Can't try 2g or 1g cards as I haven't got any more and friends don't use the comapact flash card.

aargh - you're right - the card is to small for that

use: Format F: /FS:FAT32 /A:32K and it will work.

but anyway - the 999 counting problem would stay the same (since it's a firmware thing that should not make any trouble) 999 pictures on a 300d - well, the mtbf was 25000, most sub mirrors died around 12000 - so 999 is a huge count for that small camera

Your camera does not support SDHC cards Any SD card over 2GB is a High capacity card. Use any SD card 2GB and under and it should work without a problem.

The Canon EOS 300D uses a CF Card and it supports up to 8 GBs of it.

da

@ gabe chai - 100% right - but that would make the answer from patrick 50% right - the camera does not support sdhc cards ;-)

hi guys, mike here from cheshire uk, just purchased a used 300d and i am having the same problem with a 4gb cf card, however, i took and held around 120 pictures in high .jpg format and the counter counts down under the 999 mark so it is just that the counter is only a 999 total. i had a 80-200 af lens from my old canon1000 film camera and stuck it on my 300d and the results were fantastic, works well, however remember you wont get the full frame as in the original afs lense but the quality is real good. all the best to you guys.
