2nd Hard Drive not being recognized

Hi,

I just installed a caddy and a second hard drive onto my macbookPro3,1 2.4Ghz. I used This Caddy but once i booted everything up it is not being recognized. I have the ifixit caddy otw to see if its just this caddy that is faulty. I know the hard drives are still good and have tested them externally. Any Help would be appreciated.

What ids the HD you are trying to install? If you have a second give us the details on it as well (manufacture & model number)

Both of these drive's are SATA III spec'd. You'll need to jumper the drive down to SATA I/II I/O speed as the speed is too fast for your system. That should solve your problem.

How do i go about jumper the drive down? I have only a vague idea of putting those fitted stubs on the front of the hd?

I would be contacting your vendor about this... apparently the device could be fighting with the autmagically detecting speed controllers on the drives.

I should add you should check your EFI firmware as well heres a link to the Apple TN on it EFI & SMC firmware updates for Intel-based Macs If you have an older version it too can be an issue here.

Is it an HD or an SSD that you have fitted? as the machine can only recognise 3G SSDs, a 6G wouldn't mount at all. Also, if its a new drive, have you checked in disk utility to see if its mounting? as it will need to be formatted before it mounts on your desktop.

If you are looking into the caddy being faulty, thats the only other possibility if the drive is working fine in an external unit. I have found that the caddy that you bought sometimes has a manufacturing flaw with the external solder points for the socket. If you look inside the HD fame of the caddy to the back left (the inside of the external port), none of the solder points should be touching. If there is a blob of solder joining 2 of the pins, it wont work...

I have a Kingston v300 SSD fitted into the main slot which it recognizes. I then put my old hard drive, A standard 1TB HD into the second caddy. I also tried using the 500gb seagate Hd/SDD mixed drive to see if it was the Hard Drive size that was faulty. Neither HDs Worked.
