Why does the microphone not work during phonecalls?
I just replaced the dock connector on my iPhone 4S and now the microphone does not work (people that I call cannot hear me).

Are you hearing any sound from the bottom speaker? Take the speaker/mic assembly out and clean all the contacts including the round connector on the logic board that the black cable attaches to and all contact points on the board that the speaker/mic "touches".
When you put it back in make sure the four flat silver looking grounding clips (in bottom photo) are not overlapping the metal base plate. The clips should be pressed "against" the metal plate - between the assembly and the lip of the base plate.
You can use the Voice Memo app to record and play back to test.

My part must have been defective. I requested a replacement; they sent it out right away. This time the installation worked!

There is no correct information in this thread. There is no speaker/mic assembly. The speaker and mic are on completly different parts. The Voice Memo App does not record through the bottom mic, it records through the top mic. I am glad jjenny got things working. She got it working because she replaced the charging port assembly with flex cable.
