My laptop overheating then switching off. Why?

My dell M5010 tends to overheat under normal running conditions. If I raise it off th desk a bit it helps but doesn't necessarily stop the problem.

Hi c s henman,

I once got a laptop from a friend that had the same issue. Here is what I did to solve the problem:

His computer switched off because of the internal thermostat that was activated due to overheating. The cooling circulation was interrupted through dust particles inside the laptop. I opened the computer and found that the fan was pretty dusty and clogged with dust, also the openings of the casing. In other words: There was no chance for the fan to keep the temperature inside on a normal level. As a result, the thermostat switched off the system to protect it from damage.

So, I recommend checking the fan unit and openings for dust. You might need to disassemble your laptop accordingly (and want to follow this teardown guide). However, I assume that your fan unit is not defective and runs. You might check on that first.

Yes I replaced it with and supplied power to the fan and it works. I'm guessing that the thermostat that controls the fan must be bad.

I would recommend the same method as Steffen recommended above. However, if there is no dust and the problem persists, there may be a problem with your CPU. In that case, you could try upgrading your CPU (one with a same connector), or if it is not upgradeable, use a laptop chill mat or some other cooling accessory.

Great minds think alike. I have already made that suggestion to him.
