Can the Internal Kingston eMMC be replaced?

Is the logic board in the 16gb and 32gb the same?

Given I had the right equipment to change the eMMC, will the 32gb Kingston KE4BT5D6A fit in a board that originally had a 16gb chip?

thanks

The 16GB and 32GB eMMC chips have identical electrical interface and ball assignments as defined by JEDEC eMMC 4.41 specification. Thus a 32GB can fit on a board that originally had a 16GB chip. However, the original 16GB chips may contain factory configuration and boot programs that have to be also programmed into the replacement chip. The OEM usually does this with a special equipment and software to initalize the virgin eMMC chips (probably via a JTAG port, or a special boot procedure via USB).

I've looked into replacing the eMMC on my 16GB, and if you could 'dd' the contents of the old chip onto the new one, it could be done. Unfortunately the chip is gunked pretty good down on the board (glue on and under the edges of the chip) so i've left the idea of getting the only 64 GB N7 in the world, maybe if i come across a cheap motherboard i will try to do it. There is 4 strapping resistors on the board somewhere, these tells the processor if it's connected to a eMMC chip in 8 bit mode (default in the N7) or another variant. It can be programmed to use a standard SD-card, so in theory, you should be able to remove the BGA, solder on some extremely fine wire and to a SD card socket, re-arrange the strapping resistors and make it work. I have access to a professional BGA rework station and can reball parts, but i won't try on my own N7

thanks for all your replies. I might hold off trying to experiment on my N7 for now until I find a cheap board to work on.
