I have a broken screen glass but the lcd works fine so i'm thinking of replacing it myself. Now my question is, what is the risk i am taking by doing this? After the replacement, what changes might occur with the phones software will it go to the factory settings? I mean will it erase my personal data on it like music, pics, contacts or will an activation and unlocking be required?

Jure, the touch panel replacement will not occur changes on your software. But if your touch panel quality is bad then you can have boot loops.

I would also suggest you get the front panesl assembly. No messing around with heatguns etc., it will definitely have a higher rate of success.
