When the screen goes dark try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and check for images on the screen. They will be very faint if they are there at all.
If there are images to be seen then there may be a backlight problem with the LCD display
Here’s the ifixit [guide|122452] guide that may help.

Use it to gain access to the screen so that you can check if the flex cable connections are OK. The smaller cable is for the screens backlight power supply.

Hi,
I’m wondering if the problem is connected to the eye sensor in the EVF - electronic viewfinder
Here’s the section from the [link|https://download.nikonimglib.com/archive3/f2Bcf00K5wyt03AIe7t26d88ZM52/B700RM_(En)06.pdf|user manual] that shows what the sensor does.
Try turning the viewfinder setting to off and check if the LCD stays on - see image for details

@Peter Burrows
Not sure where the sensor is but from the image in the manual it may be to the right side of the evf screen (see oval shape in image) and to the left of the monitor button.
I can only suggest that you gently clean the sensor area with a slightly damp Q-Tip (hardly wet at all, definitely not dripping, as you don't want any liquid to penetrate the camera - use clean water or Isopropyl Alcohol) in case a film or coating etc is covering the sensor and so lowering the amount of light available to the sensor somehow, making it more sensitive than it should be.
There isn't a protective peel off clear plastic cover (as per new mobile phone screens etc) over the evf/sensor area by any chance?
If that doesn't fix it, with the EVF setting back to ON, can you turn on the LCD screen when it is off, by pressing the monitor button -see image above for location?
If so you could either leave the setting on and use the monitor button when you want the LCD display or set the setting to off and have a permanent LCD display although it may be preferable to have the LCD display off if not actually using the camera at the time even though camera is on so to speak, so as to prolong the battery as the evf will use less power than the LCD screen.
Presumably there is a display in the evf, you never said?
