One possibility is that the input power jack to the laptop could be faulty and therefore when you connect the charger nothing registers in the laptop.

Also if this was the case if you kept using the laptop on the battery only (or even with the charger connected and didn't notice that it wasn't charging) the battery would eventually go flat and you then couldn't start the laptop either.
