Screen does not illuminate or turn on
When the computer is turned on, power indicators are on but the screen does not illuminate.
Screen brightness is too low
Windows can automatically lower the screen brightness depending on multiple conditions, including battery level and usage. To ensure that the brightness level is not too low, repeatedly press the Fn and F12 keys to increase the display brightness.
Device needs to be restarted
Remove all cables connected to the laptop (power adapter, HDMI, mouse, keyboard, etc). Make sure the device is powered off. Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds to restart your laptop. When done, attach the power adapter and let the laptop charge for a couple of minutes. Afterwards, power on the device as normal. If there are no indications of power either from the power button, port lights, or noise from the laptop fan, then you should move to the "Laptop does not turn on" section of this troubleshooting guide.
Display mode needs to be reset
Press the Windows key, Ctrl, Shift, and B at the same time and release. This keyboard shortcut refreshes the display connection on the laptop.
Peripherals are interfering with the display signal
Peripherals are devices (wired or wireless) that are connected to your computer, such as a keyboard or a mouse. Disconnect all of these devices from your laptop. If a peripheral's software or driver is corrupted, your display could operate incorrectly.
Test the display with an external monitor
To test the laptop's display and cables, connect the laptop to an external monitor or TV with an HDMI cable. Afterwards, restart your computer. When the laptop reboots, it should find the external display and start using it to display the desktop. If it does not display automatically, press the Fn and F10 keys at the same time. This should switch your systems display onto the external monitor.
Note: If your screen does successfully display on the external display, then you will need to look into replacing the LCD cables or even the LCD screen.
Graphics driver needs to be updated
If your graphic's driver is corrupted or out of date, the monitor could fail to function. On an external display, navigate to Lenovo support to download and install the latest graphics driver.
Windows need to be updated
Windows controls much of the built-in systems on the laptop. As a result, an outdated version of Windows can create issues with the display. Using an external display, navigate to the system settings and search for "Software Update" and install if one is available.
Explorer process needs to be restarted
The explorer.exe
executable file manages several essential processes on the laptop. Issues with this file could lead to the display not functioning properly. Try restarting the process with the following steps on an external display.
- Press the keys Ctrl, Shift, and Escape at the same time to open the Task Manager.
- Click "Details."
- Locate and select
explorer.exe
and click "End Task." - Restart the laptop to see if the display functions properly.
Laptop needs to be factory reset
This is a last resort option as factory resetting will lose all data on the device if it is not backed up. If possible, use an external monitor and back up the data on the device before continuing. To factory reset, open "Settings" and search for "Factory Reset."
Contact Lenovo support

Laptop does not turn on
When the power button is pressed, the device does not respond.
Battery level is too low
Attempt to plug the device into a power adapter. As the battery could be completely dead, it may be necessary to wait for a few minutes for it to charge to the minimum level for use. Make sure the wall adapter is providing power before plugging in the charger. Test this by trying to charge your phone or any other device which you can tell if power is coming from the outlet.
Faulty power adapter
If the laptop continues to not respond, ensure that the power cable is securely plugged into the computer. Try another outlet, and if possible, another power cable. The laptop also has a charging indicator light; if the computer is receiving power, this light will illuminate.
Device needs to be reset
If the laptop continues to fail to power on with a working adapter, attempt to reset the device by using the pin hole reset button on the left side of the laptop, between the SD card reader and the headphone port. Alternatively, disconnect the battery from the motherboard using this guide and let the device sit for a few minutes. Afterwards, reconnect the battery and try to power on the device.
Laptop is stuck sleeping
If the device still does not turn on after a power drain, the laptop may be stuck asleep or hibernating. Alternatively, it is possible that the device experienced a software issue. In some cases, it may be necessary to hard reset the laptop. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Afterwards, press the power button to start the laptop again.
The screen is too dim
If hard resetting the laptop does not work, the display may be too low to a point where it appears to be off. Make sure to plug the device into power as the screen may dim when on battery power. Hold the Fn key and repeatedly press the F12 key to increase the screen's brightness. To learn more about the function key shortcuts, refer to the Lenovo user guide.
Windows update corrupted the laptop
If the device no longer turns on after running window updates, attempt to boot Windows into safe mode. To do this, refer to Microsoft's guide to Start your PC in safe mode with Windows from a black or blank screen.

Battery does not hold a charge
The battery does not fully charge, does not last long on battery power, or does not charge when plugged into the power adapter.
Incorrect battery settings
Ensure that the battery settings are configured correctly in the Windows settings. You can access the settings by searching for "Power & Sleep Settings" in the Start menu. Check that the "Battery Saver" option is off and that the "Battery Percentage" is set to display.
Screen brightness is too high or demanding usage
The battery life of a laptop depends on factors such as usage habits, running applications, and display brightness. If you are using power-intensive applications or running your laptop on high display brightness, this can significantly reduce the battery life. Adjusting your usage habits can help prolong the battery life of your laptop.
Run a power troubleshooter
You can run the Windows power troubleshooter to detect and fix any issues with the battery. To do this, search for "Troubleshoot" in the Start menu and click on "Power." Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooter.
Uncalibrated battery
Calibration involves fully charging and discharging the battery to help it regain its full capacity. You can do this by fully charging the battery, unplugging the charger, and allowing the laptop to run on battery power until it turns off due to low battery.
Outdated BIOS and drivers
It is possible that outdated BIOS or driver software is causing the battery issue. Check the Lenovo support website for any additional updates for your laptop.
Steps to check for support:
- Go to the Lenovo Support Website. Download the updated versions of the BIOS, Energy Management, and OneKey Optimizer software for your device.
- Check the battery status in Energy Management or OneKey Optimizer.
- If the battery status is "Good," shut down your laptop and connect the AC adapter for 5-6 hours to allow the device to fully charge.
- If the battery status is "Exhausted/Damaged," run the battery gauge reset in Energy Management and OneKey Optimizer. Check the battery status again once complete.
Battery needs replacement
If the battery is old or damaged, it may need to be replaced. Lenovo sells replacement batteries for their laptops or you can search for third-party replacement options. To replace the battery, follow the guide here.

Search for and open “Device Manager.” Expand the section titled “Sound, video, and game controllers” and right click on the sound device you are using. Select “Update driver software” and follow the onscreen prompts. After you are finished, restart your computer.
