Melissa, read the above comments. It has a powerful motor that needs a lot of ventilation to avoid overheating and also has a gearbox that has a lot of metal-to-metal contact in order to translate the power from the motor to the mixing head. It could need lubrication but I doubt it.
I can tell you that there used to be a problem with the 6-quart professional mixer. It has a powerful motor and there is a gear box that translates the horizontal rotation force of the motor into the vertical rotational force. The gear box used to made out of some sort of high density phenolic which has problems standing up to the forces generated by the large gears inside. I know because I broke the gearbox while mixing heavy bread dough. I believe the newer gearboxes are made of metal. Kitchenaid cheerfully replaced my mixer even though it was out of warranty. Everything involved generates a lot of force and heat, which must be ventilated to the outside air. That’s why there is so much noise.
