If you break the battery cable clip, there's nothing you can do. You can try soldering the clip, but the connections are so small and delicate, you're probably wasting your time. You'll need a new board.
Thick: dual platter hard drive, thin: single platter hard drive. http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ip...-faq/difference-between-ipod-classic-late-2008-2g-and-ipod-classic-6g.html The nice feature about the thick model is that there's more room for modifications like a 2000mah battery, if you remove the original hd and switch it out with a ssd. http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2-000mah-ipod-video-battery.1769593/
I bought a cheap zif/usb connector to plug the ipod hard drive directly into my pc. If the hard drive is good, Windows will detect the drive. It's the easiest way to check if the hard drive is working. If it doesn't detect or gives errors, the hard drive is probably bad.
If it's not continuing, it didn't pass the headphone (HP) test. Ipods have a little detector that stops the ipod if a headphone isn't detected; it'll pause the song if the headphone jack is removed. You might want to disassemble it and replace the headphone jack. If that doesn't work, it's probably a bad board.
