Fixit Clinic, based primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area, provides guided disassembly to help people learn to fix their broken stuff.

Bring your broken stuff to a clinic. Our Fixit Coaches will help you to evaluate the problem, lend you to tools to attack it, and teach you how to use them. If you fix it, great! If you don't, well you probably learned something new about how it was supposed to work.

Celebrating repair by conveying basic troubleshooting skills: Fixit Clinics are do-it-together hands-on STEM-oriented fix-n-learn community-based exploration and discovery workshops staffed by volunteer Fixit Coaches who generously share their time, tools and (modest) expertise to consult with you on the disassembly, troubleshooting, and repair of your item.

So bring your broken, non-functioning things -- electronics, appliances, computers, toys, sewing machines, bicycles, fabric items, etc.-- for assessment, disassembly, and possible repair. We'll provide workspace, specialty tools, and guidance to help you disassemble and troubleshoot your item. Whether you fix it or not, you'll learn more about how it was manufactured and how it worked, ready to share your new-found confidence and insight with your friends, neighbors, and the community at large.

New Fixit Coaches always welcome; sign up here:

A Great Toaster

We help people repair myriad toasters, and we have found that the Sunbeam is one find toaster.

For many years Sunbeam manufactured a great toaster that was engineered to be repairable / serviced, it has adjustment screws on the bottom and it works elegantly: it doesn't have a lever, the weight of the bread levitates the toast down.

When we see one of these toasters at a [Fixit Clinic|] we're almost 100% sure it can be repaired.

If you see one of these Sunbeam toasters at a thrift store or yard sale, buy it! Most likely it will be the last toaster you need to buy. We're saddened to think of how many of these toasters were tossed prematurely because the owners didn't know the toaster was easily serviceable.

Here are photos of this toaster we've serviced:
