Il Mio Problema

I was upgrading to a lat 2012 Mac Mini from our Late '07 iMac, which was running slow with the Mavericks OS and newer applications. I didn't want to pay the high price for the Apple Fusion Drive, but wanted the capability. So I bought the Mini with the i7 processor upgrade, but did the RAM (to 16G) and 2nd drive install myself.

La Mia Riparazione

The iFixit kit was perfect. The drive cable for the second drive fit without a hitch, and the guide (as written) had nothing wrong with it. I didn't bother to check the time exactly, but the whole tear-down and reassembly was about an hour. I took pictures, but none that would add any useful embellishment to what was already in the guide....

Il Mio Consiglio

I consider myself mechanically adept, although not an electronics person in particular. That being said, using the guide I had no issues with safely removing and reinstalling the parts. I recommend getting a sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper, and writing the step number down and putting the relevant screws next to the part number just to avoid mix-ups. Take your time and make sure everything is removed and reinstalled carefully, and you will be golden.

If you are turning your second drive (SSD) into a Fusion, be sure to have the current OS installed on your boot drive (I used Mavericks 10.9.1). Then boot from the recovery partition (Command +R), and go to Disk Utility. Your original HDD and the new SSD will show as a broken Fusion volume, and you can just use the "Fix Volume" button to do the work instead of typing everything into Terminal (which doesn't seem to make exactly the same volume as what Disk Utility does...) I used this kit and guide to get a 1.5TB Fusion Mini for only a $100 more than Apple charges for a 1.1TB Fusion. FYI, I used a Samsung EVO PRO 840 500GB SSD. I used (2) Crucial 8GB RAM for the upgrade on that side. I recommend installing the RAM and booting the machine to make sure it's recognized with no problems before doing the 2nd drive/Fusion upgrade. Have fun!
