Il Mio Problema
The kids and I often go behind our local waterfall after heavy rain. The protective cover for my iPhone 5 camera lenses broke off and allowed water to enter the microphone hole.
Both local repair shops said it was repairable and the insurance excess of $200 and resulting loss of no claims bonus was hard to swallow as I have been bought up to maintain and fix anything and everything except electronics. Didn't have the first clue. Did a search, found the ifixit app and found I didn't need the first clue, there they were!

I followed the breakdown with a lot of poking the play and pause and voilá, problem sorted.
Il Mio Consiglio
I carefully brushed the screen connectors as they were corroded and I assume that I must have flicked a little isopropyl as when I turned the phone back on there was a little screen degradation. Either that or the water ingress did the damage but I'll be more careful next time in case it's the former.
