I'll confess that the problem that led me to take apart my Late 2011 Mac Mini to install a second hard drive wasn't that sexy. Its operation has been rock-solid until a month ago, when errors started popping up. Permissions errors, a kernel panic. My small business lives in this block of aluminum, so it was time to act.

I've taken apart iBooks and 40 GB iPods, so how hard could this be? As with the others, taking it apart isn't that hard; putting it back together is the challenge. The AC power connector is a lock that holds stuff together? They engineered a bobby pin to hold that in place?

These things are highly complicated pieces of delicate machinery, but they are strikingly similar to my 1965 Volkswagen's carburetor because of this simple truth: when you rebuild either of them, you will always have a screw left over.
(P.S. The bottom plate now attaches with only two of the three studs, which I don't think will hurt anything, but how did the antenna plate stretch?)
