standby light glowing but not starting up

Hello All

My macbook pro 2006 was running way too hot. I followed the ifixit guides to open the laptop, to find huge amount of dust (dust balls!) covering the motherboard, and the exhaust fins of the fan.

I did not disassamble the heat sink, but removed board, fans and superdrive. I dusted with parts with a small brush.

When I started up the machine, i could hear the superdrive starting up, and the fans revving up. But the standby/sleep light glows (constantly, not pulsating) and the screen is blank. I had left it for half an hour, and nothing changed. I also reset the PRAM (holding power button with battery and power supply disconnected for 5-10 secs)

I opened it again, and lifted the keyboard assembly (without disconnecting it) to check. The fans are working fine, but the machine is not booting up.

I also see a thick black line (isight wire?) running across the apple logo on the back of the LCD. the apple logo is not glowing.

Could you guys suggest me some diagnostics/possible source or errors? Any help is deeply appreciated.

Best

Pierre

Make sure to reset the PRAM and PMU/SMC. Also, these machines are prone to bad RAM slots, so power on with one slot empty, and then with the other empty, to see if you can identify a bad slot.

Make sure all the cables are connected and not loose. You mentioned you didn't remove the heatsync, but you did remove the board...the heatsync is on the bottom of the casing, so if you took the board out then you did break the seal between the heatsync and processor/video chip, and really you should re-apply the thermal paste. If you just stuck it back in there without cleaning/re-applying paste, that could cause overheating. Although even if it is running really hot, the machine would typically power up, at least for a while, so it would seem odd that that would be the entire problem.

I'd also remove the topcase completely and jump the power-on pads on the board in order to turn the computer on without the topcase. This will rule out the topcase as the issue, and also rule out the possibility that you put the machine back together in such a way that it is being forced into sleep mode, etc.

Beyond that, I don't think your model is prone to the Nvidia issue, but that doesn't mean the board doesn't have some sort of video problem. It's certainly odd that you are seeing a cable running across the Apple symbol, and that's proof someone who worked on your machine didn't know what they were doing. Was the screen lighting up when you were still seeing the cable through the Apple symbol, or has someone worked on the screen assembly more recently than when the current issues occurred? The fact that the problem started after you opened the machine is a pretty good indicator that something you did caused it, and that it's not random hardware failure.

More often then not this is a problem with the logic board. What is happening that you are seeing is the computer is failing the power on self test (POST) and that will make it refuse to boot up.

One thing you may want to try is opening the computer back up and making sure all of your wires are connected the way they should be. That being said 9 out of 10 times i have had this issue land on my bench its been the logic board. IF you pulled the computer apart with nothing to eliminate ESD you may have harmed your own logic board.

I actually just had a computer with the same issue come on to my bench last week and it was sure enough a failed logic board. You may have shot yourself in the foot because you opened it yourself unless you are an ACT but for a while apple was honoring a repair of the computers with that issue that was caused by a faulty GPU. Off the top of my head i cant say if they are still honoring that or not.

I am having a similar issue with my 15 inch. It will still power on and function normally, but If I shut down I have to wait 15-20 mins before it will power back on. I hear the fans spinning inside and the standby light is solid, but nothing appears on screen.

Is there any way to test the logic board before I disassemble the unit or buy a replacement?
