I have a 30GB U2 Special Edition Ipod that pretty much everything but the screen is shot in. Wondering If I can take apart a newer version Gen 5 and slap in the parts to my U2 Case,

michaelperlewitz, yes you can, it all fits. The U2 is just a customized case with customized clickwheel. The "guts" is 5th gen...Hope this helps, good luck.

Looking at the parts for the 30gb and the 80 GB the rear plates seem to be described as thick and thin styles. This would lead me to believe there is a difference in case size
Yes, the 80Gb uses a thicker drive. The rest of it is the same. So a 30GB 5th gen will fit your U2, including the drive. You would also need a 60 or 80 GB headphone jack since it is a bit longer to reach around the thicker drive as well as the battery for a 60 or 80GB for the same reason. Also, the rubber bumpers for that drive will be thicker.
So I wouldn't be able to fit the drive or battery from a 60 or 80 into a 30GB case like my U2 ipod, right?
Correct, not without replacing the above parts to compensate for the thicker drive. remember so, I have gotten a thinner 80GB HDD with Zif connector, that fit the 30GB without replacing any of the other parts.
