Just purchased a MacBook Neo and have heard that a plastic case could prevent heat dissipation and either cause damage or reduce the lifespan of the device. Given that there are no fans and that the device uses aluminum body to dissipate heat, is this something I should be concerned about?

The Neo is not a hot rod! It's intended for general use, not compiling massive code or render two hour movies.
As long as you are a light user a hard case or skins will be fine. Be careful with the cases as they often have tabs on the display side which can cause the screen to crack as the gap between the lid and uppercase is quite tight causing pressure points.
I recommend sticking with skins as they stick onto the case. I've used vinyl as well as Carbon Fiber. The texture of the carbon fiber made gripping the laptop easier. Leather is also available which is also easier to grasp.
