MBP does not begin. NVidia 8600M GT issues (most probably)
A friend of mine owns this Macbook Pro 15'', Early 2008 (Last model before the Unibody), Intel Dual Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM and a 512GB NVidia 8600M GT.
The other day he turned MBP on and the display was distorted. And just before he could login the system crashed with a message to better do a hardware test...
After a couple of hardware tests the result was the same,
4 VDC 1/40000003: video controller
He took his MBP to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) and there they ran (I guess also an Apple Hardware Test) and the conclusion was the same. A technician told him that, it must most probably the well known issue
(http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377) for these models, but they needed Apple's clearance to proceed. I don't know their conversation but Apple didn't approved the replacement, without giving any explanation.
I communicated with Apple today and they asked me if the technician ran the "NVidia, so called, Test", rather than the usual Apple Hardware Test. Is there such a test?
We are going to have the MBP re-examined, that's for sure, with an extra care to the NVidia issue...
If it was to repair it myself how difficult would that be???
What would be your opinion?
Update
Well, in case you wonder who to blame, it was the technician's fault...
We took it to a different Authorized Service and they ran the tests once again, and when they got the results and gave them to apple support, the logic board replacement got approved...
