iPhone3Gs Touch works but Display not working. Was Drenched.

I got my iPhone 3Gs drenched in rain slightly. I came home, wiped it off & put under fan. What didnt realize was that there was water drops inside (that I saw in camera glass later). I got a call, the display was very dim, but I could make out the pick call button, so I picked it. So far all good. The call dropped in ~90 secs and display went off. I thought battery went dead and then I did the biggest mistake; I plugged it to charger. shortly there was a tiny red light near earpiece (in sensors area) and the phone went quite.

After 2 days of rice-bagging & dryers, its on again. It responds to touch as before but there is no display. If I rreallllly look hard I can guess the changes in display when touched at right spots. It responds to touch, lock opens, even plays music just fine.

But its all guess work for where to tp/touch. I cant see anything on screen.

Please suggest is it a LCD/motherboard issue? Can I repair it ? Will much appreciate if you could share your thoughts.

Thank you in anticipation.

p.s. the device is out of warranty as it was jailbroken.

Thanks oldturkey. It took both backlight & LCD change for the phone to display. there was some corrosion inside; I entrusted the task to a iPhone junkie. He changed it for me but he removed the metal plate that sits just below the screen/LCD assembley. He said it was not fitting properly & chances of short circuiting would increase if I try to fit. Anyways the phone is working now... touch-wood :-)

Vin, sounds like your phone has a backlight issue. Probably shortcircuited from water damage. The first thing I suggest is to clean it. Use this guide to clean it. It was written for a 3G but applies fully to your phone. If you do not clean it, you are running the risk of failure due to corrosion at a later time. Once you cleaned it, re-evaluate. If your LCD is still in the same shape, there are a few possibilities. IT could be the LCD itself, the backlight coil, which is soldered to the logic board, or the backlight IC which is soldered to the board as well. Since you mentioned that "the display was very dim" my gut feeling is that you will most likely have to replace the LCD. Not a terrible job to do and not really to expensive. Here is the how-to and the part is available at places like this. I prefer the whole assembly since it causes a whole lot less headache and is far more convenient. Of course if you prefer the LCD by itself is available here. For a good quality item, I suggest this place. Should your backlight continue to not work, you will have to look at some board level repair. There is a backlight coil and an IC that may be giving you trouble. Check on here for a video about that issue. If you need to know how to work on your phone, check the Step-by-step Guides (just click on the tab below the picture) Hope this helps, good luck
