during boot screen pixelates then startup freezes

during bootup, the startup screen pixelates depending on angle of screen. then the startup process freezes. only way to try again is to unplug and remove battery. sometimes the screen does not come on and the macbook beeps (until you take the battery out)

it feels like something pinches or is shorted in the hinge area. the back of the lower case (at left hinge) has a crack in it (probably daughter dropped or pushed screen back too far)

what do i try to replace?

Hook it up to an external monitor and let us know what you get. This is most likely the display data cable. Please give us the last three figures of your serial number so we can get you to the correct parts and guides.

the last 3 of the serial are 0P1.

i don't have an external monitor to check it with - I don't imagine it will boot that way either since the laptop has to be open to boot - and that's when it doesn't boot. we had a new logic board put in about a year ago (by apple) but it seems to be a connection related to the movement of the display that somewhere shorts out

From your description of the problems, I would guess this is the case part you need: MacBook Rear Display Bezel and here's the cab;e: MacBook Display Data Cable

Hi

I replaced the display data cable and the inverter cable. it didn't solve the problem - but I figured out that I could boot into target mode and had no problems accessing the hard drive contents. so i erased and reinstalled OS and data and was able to get the laptop to boot normally....or so I thought. as long as the laptop was sitting on a flat surface and there were no asymmetric forces (like lifting one corner, or giving the keyboard/body any twists or pressing on the area around the keyboard) the thing ran fine. Then it started the squiggly pixelating again - usually in bands up and down the screen and would freeze. attempt to reboot caused beeping from computer. when i took the battery out, disconnected from power, reinstalled the battery - it would boot. however, now it won't boot again. I reset the system controller as well. so i've got a possessed laptop again. i have a video of the screen during boot/operations but not sure how to link it to this post.

any other ideas? Thanks.

The beep codes are significant in diagnosing problems.. how many beeps and in what sequence? From the history seems like you have something that corrupts video extension, driver, or preferences. I have seen this happen on other machines... one solution is to run only the video extensions that are used in safe-boot.
