ECM connector locking mechanism doesn’t work. Can I manually unlock it

I’m replacing a plug n play ECM and I’ve gotten as far as the first connector but this second connector it’s like when I unlock it instead of unlocking the whole connecter only the cover panel for the wires to it come off. I can see where the locking lever pushes ridges and unlocks it, should I just use a flathead and keep trying to manually unlock it? This is a DIY project but if I need to just stop and get my automotive teacher to help that’s fine.

Just in case someone looks this up in 3 years having the same problems.. I found out how to get the lever back into its pivots, I needed an extra hand but I got someone else to push the bottom of the cover (covering the wires on the back of the connector) back into place completely and we lined up the lever we had to move it a couple times with the pivots and it lined up. We had to be careful unlocking it but it worked and locked back on the new ecm.
