Improving Wifi Performance with modern base stations

MacBook Pro 17 Unibody A1297 5 2

This may be a case of listening to too many urban myths but, I was "reliably" informed that later Unibody 17 (2010 and later) have updated WiFi chipsets and perform better with more recent 802.11N (2.4 & 5GHz) and supposedly also perform better with base stations that implement MIMO.

Is this truly the case, and if so can I get improved throughput/less latency by replacing the WiFi/Bluetooth Card in my mid 2009 Unibody 2.66GHz Core 2 with a card from a more recent 17" machine 2010 or 2011.

Since the bottom has to come off to replace the battery if this does do anything now seams like a good time to do it

Early in 2007, Apple announced that most Intel Core 2 Duo-based Macs, which had been shipping since November 2006, already included AirPort Extreme cards compatible with the draft-802.11 Draft-N specification, so I suspect it already use the card you describe.

The distinction is mostly of concern to those who run other operating systems such as Linux on MacBooks, as different cards require different device drivers.

The card you mention requires three antenna connectors in the notebooks in order to use a 2 × 3 MIMO antenna configuration. So if your Macbook Pro has the three antenna connector card you have the "newest" one.

The application located in Applications->Utilities:System Profiler can be used to identify the model and supported protocols of your installed AirPort card.
