Should there be any play in the upper screen hinge?

I have an early 2009 MacBook and now there is what I would classify as excessive play in the hinge point of the MacBook.

As it sits upright, I am able to move the screen 3/32 of an inch forward and aft. It seems to be looser at the left edge of the hinge point than the right.

Is this normal or not? Does anyone else have play in that part? And could it be a problem in the future if I do not fix it?

Regards,

Frank

Update on this: I had the apple care return authorization and I waited weeks, maybe two months to send it out before vacation so I would get it when I got back. But the apple store did the repair on the spot while I went for lunch! Perfect job too.

This problem is well known. Take a look at this thread to see if yours exceeds what you think it should: http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-notebooks...

Mayer, thanks for the link. The problem I have is not the screen closing on me but it has fore and aft movement on the hinge as it sits vertically, or perpendicular to the keyboard. Think of not rotational motion, but the 'plane' of the screen able to move away from me and back toward me a total of 3/32 of an inch.

I am going to try to get to the Apple store and see if the other MacBooks are doing it too.

From everything i've read this problem may magnify. I'd take out a three year AppleCare warranty to cover it.

I bought that coverage with the machine a year ago:)
