Has anyone done a teardown of the apple iPod dock connector?

After many plug/unplug of the connector while traveling it is now coming apart and not able to provide charge, picture is attached to review, thanks for all the community help.

I changed the imageid. The post said "Invalid image id", so I moved it to the next one.

Link is broken. It would help to have it working again.

There doesn't appear to be one, but you can make one yourself and we can all benefit.

its in essence a USB cord. they cost like 5 dollers. a teardown would most likely be a waste of time. im sorry for sounding rude. but its a cable with two different commections. take off the white plastic on the connectors and under them is the rest of the plug and its connected to wire cable, under the protective plastic of the cable is... copper or nickle wire. i recommend tape. or a new one.

like i said. just get a new one. salvige the connectors if possible. they can be quite usefull if you know how to reuse them

I think having a step-by-step guide showing how to fix a cable like this would be quite useful. Fixing it is one thing— fixing it in a durable way so it lasts as actually somewhat tricky.

da

then wouldent it be better make a "How To" on repairing the cord so it lasts, instead of just making a teardown. a teardown woulod be ....for lack of a better word pointless.

Hi,

the question is not as easy as it seems.

In fact its a cord with two connectors, but i have an av cable and wanted to use it to charge my iPhone. USB into the laptop, dock connector into the iPhone, guess what the iPhone says that the cable is not supported and even refuses to charge. Same cable but a iPod at the dock connector is charging the iPod.

I would find this useful because I currently have a MA591G USB dock connector cable that appears to be not working at the moment.

Chris Jones, here is the pinout for the cables http://pinouts.ru/PortableDevices/ipod_p... and all you have to do is to trace the connections so that you see if your cable makes the right connection

@oldturkey03 I saw that link while googling for ways to troubleshoot the USB dock connector/cable, but even knowing the pin outs, how you isolate which wire is faulty on the cable? Would I need a working cable? Then would I take a continuity reading from each of the 30 pins or cross reference against the link stated above to see if all the pins are performing the way they should?

Chris, good job on tearing it down. There is apparently more than just a few wires and two ends :-) I would start to check each contact against the schematic from pinouts.ru for continuity. At least it is a start so that you know that the wires are connected.

I actually had two broken USB cables, The ipod cable was broken at the USB A end and another one was broken at the USB Mini A end so I spliced it, took the four cables (Red, black, green and... I forgot) soldered it, and also soldered the EFI blocker (not sure what its called) together and it works like a charm.. and its longer now!
