How can I fix my keyboard and trackpad?

It was working perfectly then Turn it off, then back on and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working, and it said that it is looking for an external keyboard, mouse, in the store they told me they'll have to change the whole unibody thing and that it will be 250€, as it isn't insured, so I decided to get external ones for a much more reasonable amount. Anyway, I don't like having to carry all that stuff, everywhere, i got a laptop for a reason. Keyboard light thing still works, i'll like to fix it for a REASONABLE price, got any help?

You can get a good used Topcase on Ebay for around $100.00 and make the exchange yourself. Did they tell you your logic board is ok? Here is the link to the guide.

The keyboard to logic board cable can be a real pain to get locked into place all the way. This is an easy check and fix. Take a look at the depth of insertion of the ribbon cable in the manual. The lock down lever is very delicate so be careful if you flip it up to unlock. If the cable does not appear to be seated all the way, then follow the directions in the guide to reseat it. Keyboard and trackpad have different connector ribbons. Open the thing up and look for loose keyboard connection ribbon and trackpad ribbon. Re-insert firmly and try power on again to see if that don't fix it.

If both keyboard quit working at the same time and the system had not been opened, what caused both cables to become loose? Perhaps a major fall could, not mentioned. Mentioned: Taken to Apple store and they state, replace uppercase: Do you think the Apple store checked the cables?

One of the more common causes of simultaneous failure of both trackpad and keyboard is "wear and tear" on the exposed portion of the upper case cable located within the battery bay. (This was the case on my Macbook Pro).

To diagnose whether or not this is the issue, I recommend the following tweak. I'll describe it in brief below, but you'll find it better detailed at the following URL: http://lbarclay.wordpress.com/2009/01/29...

If you take out the battery, you will be able to see an orange cable extending from the case and plugging into a board protected by a transparent plastic barrier. (This cable is the upper case cable). Simply placing constant pressure on this portion of cable appears to restore function to the keyboard and trackpad. To apply this pressure, some have used cellophane tape or simply sandwiched a few business cards in between the battery and cable. This is simply a stop-gap measure, but if it works on your machine, it will be diagnostic of the problem and will allow you to continue working with your machine normally until a replacement upper case cable can be installed.

The replacement cable is sold on ifixit for about 30 bucks... just do a search for "upper case cable" on ifixit to find the one appropriate for your machine.
