Won't turn on without power adapter, battery doesn't hold up.

My MacBook A2338 stopped holding a charge with the old battery and started displaying the "service required" message. So, I ordered a new battery replacement from iFixit. and I installed the new battery and attempted to calibrate it. However, even after charging it for nearly 14 hours, the battery percentage remains unchanged. Additionally, when I disconnect the power adapter, the MacBook simply shuts down.

I'm unsure what could be causing the issue. Attached is a screenshot of the Coconut Battery report.

The weird thing, as you can see, is that it indicates "charging with: 0 Watts." Additionally, this is what the macOS displays:

Thanks

Update 06/05/2023:

I opened my MacBook again to check if there was something preventing the battery from making contact with the logic board, but it seems fine. I attached some photos of it:

I sent an email to iFixit, and they are going to send me a battery replacement. Hopefully, everything goes smoothly. I will update this post once I install the battery again and test it.

Thanks for the answers!

Update 06/24/2023:

After receiving the battery, I installed it and attempted to power on my MacBook once more. Regrettably, macOS is not recognizing the battery this time. I will attach the Coconut Battery report.

Looking at the CoconutBattery output we can see the battery is not charged and the charging state is zero! We also can see the date of the batteries manufacture is back in 2015 which is clearly not possible! As the battery maker couldn’t know what Apple was planing in 2020.

So it’s clear to me this is a messed up battery as the Micro-Controller logic is not working correctly. Contact the iFixit store of a warranty replacement.

Thanks for the answer. I sent an email to iFixit requesting a replacement, and they have confirmed that they will send me one. Hopefully, it works fine. I will update this post once I install the replacement.

I believe I have received another defective battery, which is sad.

@josh34456 - Ugh! 🤦

This second battery is messed up too! Review the contacts and see if reseating the connection fixes this. The NaN is either from within the battery or it’s connection to the system via the ribbon cable.

I mostly see this when the batteries micro controller is bad. The vendor has had a tough time with its quality control of the physical chip or the programming of the chip.

Give them a call for still another battery!

So here's what I'm getting from this.

The system knows the battery is there. So it's getting data from the new battery. But power transmission to or from this battery is not occurring. The system knows the battery has available power, it just can't use it. This could be a couple things, but the first thing I would do is check your work.

Power is transmitted to and from the battery through the flexible bit at the bottom of the board that the big chunky T5 screw goes through. I would make sure the screw is present and there isn't anything here (stickers or otherwise) that might be preventing it from making contact.

Thanks for the answer. I updated the post with my findings, and everything looks fine.

@flannelist - SMC is working, but the data from the battery is not getting through. Look at the second CB capture. The NaN is a no data error.

Since COVID there’s been a rise of bad batteries! And it’s not just iFixit, I have a local store which sells them that I use as well and I can tell you I got two bad batts about six months apart.
