Why doesn't my Shark NV500 wand fit into the receiver?

My Shark NV500 wand gets very strong suction, but no longer fits back onto the main body, so suction does not get to the roller. The end of the wand to be inserted has not incurred any damage. We also do not see any damage where the wand must be inserted, but the wand no longer fits where it previously did, and, of course, cannot lock into place, since it never reaches the lock point.
