OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A Alternatives..!

My 24" 2.8Ghz Intel iMac Core 2 Duo Extreme's OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A has failed.

On checking various forums it's symptoms are concurrent with many other users.

I now need to replace it, though would be looking for an alternative, like for instance the 12.7 mm PATA 8x Pioneer SuperDrive........Would this be compatible?

I am obviously looking for a more reliable drive, so any advice would be great..

I successfully fitted a new super-drive, which although buying the Sony OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A replacement, I actually ended up with the Panasonic (MATSHITADVD-RAM UJ-846S) drive..!!........... I got my drive from here: http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/11642957/repl...

I did have to remove the two small locating lugs on the front of the caddy and the other thing I have found is that using this drive with the caddy for the Sony Optiarc, it doesn't situate the drive closer enough to the outer edge of the imac, which does cause problems with activating the drive so it pulls the CD/DVD into the machine. I now have to just slightly touch the edge of the inserted CD/DVD with a credit-card to get the drive to activate..!!

If it's the same size as your old one and the slot mechanism and location is the same the physical side of things should be OK.

Now the next issue has Apple used this player in a different system so the OS has the needed drivers? You could also check with the maker if they supply drivers or are compatible.

It can't hurt to try. Good Luck

Thanks Dan, The driver issue could be a problem I don't want to face, so maybe I may stick with the same drive..??

The caddy that holds the superdrive in place may or may not fit the drive without modification. There are two small bumps at the front of the caddy, where the superdrive open slot would sit flush. depending on the drive/caddy you may need to snap these off for the drive to fit correctly, otherwise it will push the top of the superdrive down and discs will not be accepted.

Hope this helps,

Wes
