Why do I keep getting question mark folder when booting from SSD

I bought an SSD to replace the older HDD that was originally apart of my macbook pro. I've tried a few different methods, but I can't seem to get the SSD to boot when I install it in my macbook. My macbook doesn't even detect it when it's the only drive attached.

I've tried cloning the drive, and I've tried installing MacOS first, then using time machine to restore my data, but I always get the question mark folder when trying to boot from the SSD.

My original HDD still works when I reinstall, so I know the SATA cable is undamaged.

There are a few things that can mess you up! First the macOS version your current drive has is likely High Sierra, but the internet recovery will install Something older. Then if you had tried cloning your HDD to the SSD the OS won’t install properly. I haven’t need to use a cloning app for a good 20 years now!

So to fix this you need to work off your HDD, first download the macOS you are currently running from here How to download macOS and follow this guide to create a bootable OS installer USB thumb drive Create a bootable installer for macOS

You will need to boot up under the thumb drive and format you SSD so it’s clean, then run the OS installer. Make sure the SSD is working the use the Migration Assistant tool to transfer your stuff over.

Hi, thanks for the help, but it seems that this did not work for me. It looks like my macbook is having a hard time recognizing the SSD when it's attached with the SATA cable, but recognizes it just fine when attached through USB. In fact, I was able to make the SSD a bootable drive, but only when plugged in via USB.

@jamieramdi39374 - Then your problem is a bad HD SATA cable. Here’s a bit more on the problem Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb. The reason the SDD encounters issues is the data I/O flow through the cable is higher than what the HDD encounters.

Think of it this way… There is a curve in the road and you are going 30 mph so you slide around it with no problem! Now this time you are going double that! But the curve is too curved so you slide off the road or worse! That’s the effect we have here the flow is to great for your current cable either because it’s old or it’s damaged.

thank you, I had actually encountered this solution, but i was unsure whether or not the cable was the problem.

I had heard that some fraction macbook pros shipped with different SATA cables allowing them to be compatible right away with SSDs, and going into About this Macbook shows that I have a link speed of 6Gb/s, which should be SSD compatible.

Bottom line is if there is any way to definitively know if my cable is the right one before I spend money on a new cable, and what other fixes I could try assuming the cable isn't the problem?

@jamieramdi39374 - Sorry to bust one bubble here. The link speed only tells you what the drive is or how the handshake went to the system it’s not always truthful!

As an example some MacBook Pros optical drive ports have a SATA III (6.0Gb/s) interface and will report that, but there is a bug in the hardware so it can only support SATA II (3.0Gb/s) drives. If you have an auto sense drive it won’t work reliably! And that also holds for a SATA III drive as well.

The cable I linked too is the correct rev of the cable for SATA III drives.

Let me answer your last question this way. When ever I put in a SSD replacing a HDD into a 2011 or 2012 MacBook Pro I alway replace the cable.

OK, so the cable works!
