Start menu icons gone from my Windows Vista 32bit PC after virus removal tool

Hello,

I recently got rid of a virus, and after restarting it, my start menu icons are missing when I go to the start menu. I looked through my documents and the icons that were missing are in folders in 'my documents'. However, I tried to click on them and a window comes up and says I don't have access to it. When I click continue to access it, I'm denied permission.

I'm not exactly sure if it has anything to do with the fact that I used the microsoft malicious software removal tool.

Help is appreciated.

If you know of this problem, caused by the malware and it's removal, you could find 10 more you are not aware of - yet. Save yourself time and headaches, back up your data, format your hard drive, reinstall your operating system and programs. If you took this to any professional to fix/repair the problem, this is exactly what they would do to make you happy and protect their reputation, while charging you $50 - $100USD per hour to do it. Professional ITs are not interested in applying fancy fixes that may have questionable results. They want it fixed right, the first time, with as little headache and effort as possible.

Think about what I am suggesting. How much time do you have invested into this unsolved problem already? As you describe the problem, there is a chance the antivirus is what has restricted access to those as their executable files were/are infected. It is anyone's guess as to how and why the icons and/or files were moved and permissions restricted. If the antivirus did this, will altering the permissions release the malware again? How much more time are you willing to spend on it, with no guarantee in the results? My suggestion gives you guaranteed desired results, with a known end to the amount of time spent.

On this one I agree with AB--save your data and reload your OS. +

Sounds like the virus/malware changed some permissions on your file/folders. Give this a try. If this doesn't work, let us know.

I tried it. Now it keeps saying "there was an error occurred while applying security information", "access denied", and it's "unable to save the permission changes".

Sounds to me like John is right. This was most likely done by a Virus or Malware. Have you tried to access your permission through safe mode? you may have to try and repair Windows. have you tried to restore to an earlier time? Check on here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212 and here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windo... as well.

@oldturkey03 - most malware/viruses will infect Windows rollback files. I agree with ABCellars, below, when I get an infected system in I back off the data, re-install the os, restore the data and install the basics like flash, adobe reader, win updates, anti-virus. Extra if I have to re-install their apps.

Even something like Kaspersky Recovery, which boots into Linux, claims to remove viruses, but after a 3 hour wait your windows system will likely be unstable.

Also, when copying files off, I use Knoppix since many viruses will lock windows files and using a windows boot won't let you copy those files. On the newly installed OS, with AV installed, I then copy back the files and let the AV catch things like movie/pdf files that are infected.

@John-I do reinstall the OS after formatting my drives anytime I have malware or viruses that can not be removed by conventional means. I am not implying that a restore would fix that.

Check the attributes of the individual folders under %username%\Start Menu\ as well as All Users\Start Menu\ to see if the items in question had attributes changed. Some menu and desktop items instead of being folders\shortcuts under those paths are added instead directly in the registry, and that's what the Kelly's Korner fix tried to fix.You should also try numerous anti-virus and anti-malware.You can try COMODO
