FZ-10 weird lines across the screen

Like the title says, I have a Panasonic 3DO FZ-10 and when powered on it shows purple horizontal lines across the screen, the board looks fine and I’m trying to find a good starting place to check and see what’s wrong with this console, there is this chip that someone said was an rgb mod, maybe this could be the issue?

I know the power supply inside is a new one because the old one was burnt out when this unit arrived probably due to the wrong voltage so I got this replacement unit and it tests out okay

Update (11/05/2022)

I should also mention that I did try composite as well as S-video and they are both doing the same thing.

@cwr take some good pictures of the whole board. The mod chip can most certainly be the issue here. What this looks like is a problem with the scan rate. Can you change your TV to something like the original 640x480 or 768x576 (unusual) and see if that changes things. If it is an RGB mod it should have a RGB board somewhere.

I had a 480p monitor from 20 years ago so I tried s video on that but same issue, I’ll upload pictures soon

da

@oldturkey03 I didn’t install this chip, I bought it from another seller and I asked him about it and he isn’t sure either, it looks aftermarket but I couldn’t find a good source online

da

@cwr i totally get it. Those are good consoles and I am all for it. Just hard to diagnose if something goes wrong. Good idea about using the older display. Nothing nicer than playing the games from decades ago on a retro platform ;-)

I uploaded the photos now, I did replace 3 caps near the video output just to eliminate that, composite and a-video both have the same issue

Hi @cwr81

Here's the service manual that may help.

Maybe start with the Troubleshooting Table as shown on p.2-5

@jayeff thank you for the manual, I traced it back but didn’t find any issues, I added a photo of what someone told me was an rgb mod, could this be the reason as to why it is having weird issues, it is a Japanese unit

da

@cwr81

I don't know about rgb mode but a quick check online shows that if you want to view a console that has an rgb mod then connecting to a TV with a scart input may be the way to go.

Scroll to the bottom of this page to "How Does Your Game Console Output RGB?"

If it was a console made for Japan then either it was modded to rgb for better visuals or to allow it to be connected to TVs that didn't use NTSC as their video system. Japanese TV use NTSC (same as USA), EU use PAL

da

@jayeff, I am not 100% sure about it being an rgb mod since I couldn’t find information about it anywhere but it doesn’t look factory

da

@cwr81

Search through this website. You may come across some info that will help

da

@jayeff I didn’t see anything that matched the chip in my system, it looks like a modchip but an older one
