Will a missing headlight assembly cause it not to start

I have acquired a Craftsman LT2000 riding mower. I have replaced the solenoid and the key switch. I have tested the seat switch, the PTO switch and the brake switch. All are good. I jump across the starter and it cranks and runs but I can’t do this every time. I want to be able to crank it with the key switch. I noticed that the headlight Assemly has been removed and the connector has been cut off of the existing wires under the mower hood. Would this be a reason that the mower will not crank with the key switch? Would this cause a grounding break in the electrical system?

Hi,

What is the model number of the mower? LT2000 is the model series and there's a few different models within the series.

Not the easiest but try this link and click on Models and then the relevant model number > Shop parts.

Scroll the different sections to the right to find the schematic diagram for the mower.

Here's a poor copy from model #917289106

There's not that much in the start circuit. To get the solenoid to operate, power goes from +ve battery terminal, through a fuse, thru an ammeter (if applicable), through the ignition key start position (n - s terminals connected), through the brake switch operated, the PTO switch normal, through the solenoid coil and back to -ve terminal of battery.

Since you have checked the brake switch and PTO switch that only leaves a fuse, the ignition key or the solenoid. Can you hear the solenoid click when you operate the ignition key? It is the solenoid operating that connects power to the starter motor

But if the ground circuit has been broken by the wires being cut from the headlight assembly, would this cause it not to start or even turn over. Nothing happens when you turn the key. No clicks, no sound. Nothing. Thoughts?

The wire from the -ve terminal of the battery goes to earth, (chassis).

There is no diagram for how the earth wires run between all the components that are connected to earth e.g. solenoid, starter motor, ignition unit etc.

You would have to follow the black wire from the solenoid coil back to where it connects to the earth multiple.

If you have an Ohmmeter, disconnect the black wire from the solenoid and then connect one lead from the meter to it and the other lead of the meter to a clean bright metal point the chassis or the -ve battery terminal. You should measure 0.00 Ohms. If you read open circuit or OL then there's a break in the earth to that wire. If you read 0.00 Ohms check that you get 12V DC on the white wire on the solenoid with the ignition key in the start position and the safety switches operated etc. If not then there a problem with the 12V power circuit to the solenoid.

If you get both OK then disconnect both wires from the solenoid and measure its resistance. I don't know what it should be but it shouldn't be OL or open. If it is you have a bad solenoid coil.

You could always connect a wire lead from the -ve battery terminal to solenoid's black wire connection terminal and then try starting the mower in the normal manner with the key.

If it starts then there's no earth on the solenoid and you would have to chase the black wire. If it doesn't start then there a problem in the 12V power getting to the solenoid or the solenoid

I’ll try this and get back with you. Thanks for your help
